Photography 101
Learn more than just the basics. Lessons and personalized homework will jump start “your art” and your understanding of “the science” of capturing light. Learning over several consecutive weeks is recommended (3 Weeks or 5 Weeks) but you can also schedule single lessons (1, 2, 3 hours).

Just the Basics
This is for those that just want to learn the basics. Quickly.
Especially for you if you are leaving next week for vacation or an important kids sports tournament weekend. One or two hours will jumpstart your immediate results and enjoyment of photography.

Smartphone. Camera.
Bring both! Your smartphone is good enough for some of your photography and video. Your “real” camera gives you more control (more fun!) and potentially much better quality super sized enlargements. But we all use the cameras on our smartphones too. The focus of this lesson is on People / Travel / Street / Food photography.

There are “rules” that simplify your art. But we are not baking a cake… and you do not need to follow the recipe… but learning the recipe is a good place to start.

Start with Light
Start by simply being aware of natural light. Find it, follow it, wait for it, then use your knowledge of your camera settings to achieve “your art”.
Visit an art museum and look at The Dutch Masters. You will be able to see how the artist saw “in his mind” the Light, Subject, Background, Forground before he painted it. Before he arranged his Composition. You will be able to see in the painting the location and direction of the light coming through the window… precisely hitting the Subject… that the artist wants you to focus on.
Exposure Compensation and The Exposure Triangle gives you moments of joy, every day.

Start with Action
Subjects and things that move… do you want to “freeze” motion… or… do you want to “let motion blur”? This decision is “your art” of Shutter.

Start with Background
Sure, you know to focus on the Subject. But what do you want to do with the Background? By “softening” (slightly blurring) the background you can separate the Subject from the Background and make the Subject “pop out” and show depth. How much depth? This decision is “your art” of Aperture.

Start with Subject
Is it the person… or the farm? Where you precisely Focus is “your art”. This photo shows the fibers of the hat, revealed above the eyes. The camera in her hands is slightly blurred. The field is “softened” more but can still be identified as Yorkshire England.

Soccer Moms & Dads
For parents, and grandparents, of kids that play Soccer, LaCrosse, Baseball, Football, Swimming, Tennis, Track & Field, Cross Country, Fencing, Golf and other sports that want to take magazine quality photos of their kids.
Start with the camera you already own. Or learn using one of my cameras. You can also rent locally the crazy expensive lenses professionals use.
Knowledge and your skill is more important than the equipment you own. It is best to learn first, then staircase your investments in new gear.

Golf
Whether you use golf as a way to build stronger relationships with your customers or just for fun with your friends and family… good photography can capture special moments.
Early mornings and late afternoons have the best Light. While “real” cameras are more fun to use to capture fleeting moments of opportunity, the better smartphones can capture fast action (freeze motion with fast Shutter) separate the Subject from the Background (soften / blur the background with Aperture).
Smartphone or Camera (bring both!) if you take the time to learn “the math” of the Exposure Triangle you will have more fun with “your art”.

Before your next vacation or business trip… learn here at home. I will help you choose local places / subjects / situations / conditions similar to your destination to practice with before your next trip.
If you are leaving next week… one or two hours will jumpstart your immediate results and enjoyment of photography.
If you have more than a month before your trip… I recommend the 3 Week Series of Lessons so that you can learn at a deeper level and have more time to play with the “building blocks” of knowledge.
